Watch out at the cash machines

‘Be very aware and cautious about others being close or offering to be helpful at an ATM’
• I USED my bank card at the ATM outside Barclays Swiss Cottage last week at about 11.30am.
A youngish man at the adjacent machine intervened, saying it was not working and was retaining users’ cards.
He advised me to cancel my transaction and enter my date of birth, which would result in the card being returned.
He was very insistent; I became suspicious and went into the bank to report the card being retained.
The bank staff said they suspected a fraud and, on checking, found that a large sum had been drawn from my account.
They were immediately helpful in taking details and preparing a police crime report, for which I am most grateful.
I’m in no doubt I was targeted as being elderly and disabled but despite my suspicions the theft was committed almost instantly.
Be very aware and cautious about others being close or offering to be helpful at an ATM.
