‘There’s nowhere else like it’: Shoppers to hold farewell celebration for Waitrose

'We are going to see it off Camden Town style'

Waitrose in Camden High Street is to become an Aldi

A FAREWELL celebration for Waitrose will be staged next month when the supermarket chain’s store in Camden Town shuts.

Flowers will be handed out to staff as shoppers bid goodbye to the store at 2pm on September 12.

It is being replaced by Aldi after four years on the High Street.

“We’re going to see it off Camden Town-style,” said regular customer Rose Harte. “We ain’t Pimlico, we ain’t Swiss Cottage – you wouldn’t get this in Muswell Hill.”

Ms Harte said the store had become a crucial meeting point for some of Camden Town’s more unusual characters, who would be attending the farewell. “Waitrose has been a really great meeting point for people,” she said. “The seating area, there’s nothing else like it and a lot of people don’t know what they are going to do when it goes.” Aldi is not expected to open until next April.
