The Highgate International Chamber Music Festival is coming to an end this Friday evening (December 1) with a Gala Concert held in St Anne’s, Highgate West Hill. Pieces being played include Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No 2 in E minor; Dvorak’s Songs my mother taught me from his Gypsy Melodies; and Brahms’ String Quintet No 2 in G major. • Sing your hearts out with 2,000 people at the London Symphony Orchestra’s grand Choral Christmas at the Barbican on Sunday evening. The LSO celebration is led by more than 300 singers from across London including various LSO choruses and choirs accompanied by the jubilant sounds of the LSO Brass Ensemble. • There are a couple of interesting “drop-ins” coming up at the British Museum. First, on Friday evening (December 1), you can drop in whenever you like to listen to Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil performed by the Choir of Kings College London. Then, on Sunday afternoon (December 3), inter-faith music is being performed by religious community groups in a Faiths-in-Tune “drop-in” concert. • In 1757, a medal was struck to commemorate Hungary’s defeat by Frederick the Great of Prussia and the medal became a token for a foundling named Prescilla housed at the Foundling Hospital, Bloomsbury, the following year. A concert marking the 250th anniversary of the medal is being held at the Foundling Museum, Blooomsbury, next Thursday lunchtime. Cello music by Brahms and Popper are being played along with Alfred Schnittke’s introspective second cello sonata.
