Rogue landlord ban is a first for London

• GIVEN that private renters now make up the largest number of households in the borough (over a third according to the 2011 Census), we thought your readers would like to know that Camden Council has obtained London’s first rogue landlord banning order, against an individual who repeatedly placed tenants’ lives at risk through letting out unsafe properties in the Euston and King’s Cross areas.
Following a hearing at the first-tier tribunal in October, he has been banned for four years from letting any housing in England and engaging in letting agency or property management work.
If the banning order is breached, penalties can include imprisonment for up to 51 weeks or a court fine, or both, or a civil financial penalty of up to £30,000.
Interestingly he had issued some tenants with agreements in which he claimed that he was the landlord, although he was, in fact, sub-letting from the real owners.
These shocking practices tend to take place in the more “off the radar” parts of the private rented sector where younger renters, and those from overseas who have come here to either work or study, tend to live.
We want to see much more enforcement action taken against bad landlords and that’s why we will be doing our best to support the new rogue landlord task force that is currently being formed by Camden Council.
This particular individual was brought to the attention of the council via a referral made to the Rogue Landlord and Agent Checker which is run by the Greater London Authority at: www.london.gov.uk/rogue-landlord-checker.
