GARY Sycamore needed a wheelbarrow to take home his impressive silverware haul after the 156th Highgate Horticultural Society Summer Show on Saturday.

The talented gardener won no fewer than 10 cups and trophies, and three “Diploma of Excellence” certificates. Among his prizes were the John Keynes Cup for the most points for cut flowers, pot plants, fruit and vegetables, the Lady Tribe Memorial Cup for his two containers of sweet peas, and the Frank Seymour Memorial Cup for his “cook’s delight trug of vegetables” exhibit.

But Mr Sycamore didn’t quite win everything at the United Reformed Church in South Grove, Highgate. John and Tessa Hauxwell collected the Edith Imber Memorial Cup for most points in home baking and handicraft classes, and the Thomas A Weston Cup for their gooseberry jam.

The Mayor of Camden, Councillor Jenny Headlam-Wells, presented the prizes to all the winners, including Zarin Nadjafian, who won the HW Smith Memorial Cup for her basket of summer flowers and foliage.

Committee member Laura Boothman said: “On a day full of competition – not least England’s World Cup play-off and the Ladies’ Wimbledon final – old rivals and new competitors were vying for the top spot as Highgate Horticultural Society held our 156th Summer Show.

An unusually wet spring has given way to a particularly dry summer, but, despite these climatic challenges, members still managed to exhibit a wide range of summer flowers, fruit and vegetables, alongside home-baking and handicraft.”
