FIREFIGHTERS have spent the early hours of today (Thursday) battling a major blaze at a mansion block in West Hampstead.

More than 100 firefighters were called into action at the fire close to West End Lane. The Black Lion pub opened its doors to people who could not get to their homes.

West Hampstead station manager Clainton Murray, from the London Fire Brigade, said: “The fire is believed to have started in a flat on the fourth floor. The fire is also affecting the roof and in the early stages was very visible for miles around. Firefighters assisted two people from the first floor and around 50 have evacuated the block.”

The flames at the block at the centre of the wide cordons, Welbeck Mansions in Inglewood Road, could be seen across north London at their highest.

The London Fire Brigade reported that the fire was under control shortly after 3am. Angelica Malin, who could see the fire from her bedroom window and shared footage, said: “So much respect for our London Fire Brigade. I’ve been watching 2 firemen on cranes work on putting the flames out for an hour and a half without stop. Such heroes.”

A London Fire Brigade statement said earlier this morning: “Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters are tackling a flat fire on Inglewood Road in West Hampstead. The fire is on the top floor of the five storey block and very visible for miles around.”

It added: “The Brigade was called at 0104. Fire crews from West Hampstead and surrounding stations are at the scene. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”
