THE cancer charity Maggie’s is trying to keep it a secret but I hear that the wunderkind of architecture, Daniel Libeskind, has been picked to design its newly planned building in the car park area adjacent to the Rowland Hill entrance to the Royal Free hospital in Hampstead.

Design concepts are being kept from prying eyes but I gather that it will look like a wicker basket or cradle. Maggie’s does its best to avoid giving its centres an institutional look so it is likely to have lots of light, colour and greenery.

Libeskind – who designed the new World Trade Center in New York and the Jewish Museum in Berlin, as well as part of the Metropolitan University in Holloway Road – is due to give a talk at the Royal Geographical Society on May 22 where he might unveil his design.
