Forensic officers examined the scene in Hampstead Road

A WOMAN is fighting for her life in hospital this afternoon (Friday) after being hit by a construction lorry near Mornington Crescent.

Police said the female pedestrian, who was in her 50s, was “seriously injured” during the collision in Hampstead Road. Paramedics were called shortly before midday to the scene near Cardington Street.

Detectives investigating the collision have asked for anyone who witnessed the collision, or the moments before, to contact them on 0208 991 9555. The lorry, which was travelling southbound towards Euston Road at the time of the collision, remains at the scene and is being arrested by forensic officers. The driver has not been arrested, police said.

There have been sustained calls for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to be fitted with additional safety features following a number of accidents.

An inquest into the death of Sheila Karsberg, who was died after a collision with a cement mixer in Camden Town last year, is due to take place on Tuesday. Her death led to calls for a ban on HGVs during rush hour.
