Kieran Gibbs leaves Arsenal for West Brom after 230 appearances

30 August, 2017 — By Geoffrey Sawyer

ONCE tipped to a home-grown talent that would command a regular place in the Arsenal defence and a full back who challenged for a place in the England team, Kieran Gibbs today (Wednesday) left the club in a £7 million move to West Brom.

Gibbs, 27, leaves after falling down Arsene Wenger’s pecking order despite being fielded in 230 matches and occasionally wearing the captain’s armband. His future has been up in the air all summer as Wenger looks to cut down his bloated squad and was previously linked to a switch to Watford.

“I watched the boys [WBA] in the first few games of the season and they’ve got a lot of energy,” said Gibbs. “They’ve made some good signings and I feel this is a good move for me.”

The deal is said to be first of several late departures likely ahead of tomorrow’s (Thursday’s) transfer deadline. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to leave the club with a price agreed with Chelsea but Liverpoool also interested. Manchester City, meanwhile, are continuing their pursuit of Alexis Sanchez, while Skhrodan Mustafi has been linked with a switch to Inter Milan.
