Keir Starmer: PM must let us vote on Brexit deal now

Theresa May saw 117 of her own MPs vote against her, leading Shadow Brexit Secretary to declare: The government is broken

13 December, 2018 — By Richard Osley

HOLBORN and St Pancras MP Sir Keir Starmer today (Thursday) called on Theresa May to let the House of Commons vote on her Brexit deal “as soon as possible” in the wake of the bid by her own backbenchers to oust her from No. 10.

The Shadow Brexit Secretary told the New Journal that the under-siege Prime Minister “could not expect to carry on as if nothing had happened” as the Brexit stalemate continued and 117 of her own MPs voted to say they had no confidence in her leadership.

While Ms May won the support of two thirds of her party and has won immunity from a leadership challenge for a year, she has been warned that her victory will not translate in new support for her withdrawal agreement from the EU. She has vowed to carry on in the post, but will not contest the next general election as the Tories’ leader of the next general election.

Mr Starmer, who was in Camden Town this morning visiting a drop-in service for rough sleepers, said: “The result shows that the government is broken. The Prime Minister should now bring her Brexit deal to the Commons and let us vote on it as soon as possible.”

Ms May cancelled plans for a parliamentary vote late on Monday amid warnings that she would have suffered a massive defeat.
