Join Unite’s day of action against Universal Credit

Unite’s Day of Action Against Universal Credit, this Saturday, December 1
• A WOMEN’s contingent will join Unite’s Day of Action Against Universal Credit, this Saturday December 1. The contingent is part of the UN’s 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women and Girls.
It follows the report of the UN rapporteur hearings on extreme poverty in the United Kingdom, who said Britain’s welfare system is so sexist it may as well have been compiled “by a group of misogynists in a room”.
I gave evidence on behalf of Black Women’s Rape Action Project that Universal Credit and other welfare cuts have increased women’s poverty which in turn increased women’s vulnerability to sexual and domestic violence.
The women’s contingent will meet at Camden Town tube at 11am, joining Camden Unite Community. At 2pm we’ll join London branches of Unite Community, and grass-roots groups at Ladbroke Grove station in the shadow of Grenfell Tower.
We’re holding a placard-making session today (Thursday) at 6pm at Crossroads Women’s Centre. Come and help make visible how different sectors of women and children are impacted by Universal Credit. There’ll be tea and snacks to keep us all going.
All women and girls are welcome. Please spread the word on social media and in your networks – we aim to have a good turn-out.
