• JOHN Gulliver’s sneering comments don’t reflect either the content or the atmosphere of the event at the Marx Memorial Library, (Shadow chancellor’s ‘cunning plan’, October 4).

John McDonnell’s talk went down very well, inside and outside the hall. A thoughtful presentation contrasting the circumstances of the “just about surviving” with the tax giveaways and excesses of corporations and profiteers, it led to the description of a series of essential steps needing to be made by an incoming Labour government.
