It’s a bunch of Remainers who never seem to be off our television screens who are to blame for Brexit

22 June, 2018

• I AM puzzled by an aspect of Brexit and hope that someone in Remain Islington can enlighten me.

Why would more than 90 per cent of MPs vote for the European Union Referendum Bill 2015 when so many of them knew what the consequences of leaving would be?

The full list of MPs who voted for the Bill is easily found. We know who campaigned to leave and who campaigned to remain.

MP Owen Smith, who voted for a referendum, stated that leaving the EU will be “the biggest economic crisis our country will have faced for many, many generations”.

Maybe overstating things a little but, nevertheless, if leaving would be so bad why vote for a referendum, the result of which might bring that very thing about? Where is the sense in that?

Those MPs who voted for a referendum yet knew the damage leaving the EU would cause are the guilty men and women. They opened up the possibility of harming our country by voting for a referendum we did not need to have. A wilful act of vandalism? Apologies due?

MP Anna Soubry who voted for holding a referendum has warned that “History will condemn those who haven’t tried to stop all this nonsense.”

Maybe Anna needs to be reminded of the fact that voting, as she did, for a referendum caused this “nonsense”. So if staying in is so great and leaving is so bad why on earth gamble with our membership?

It’s a bunch of Remainers who never seem to be off our television screens who are to blame for Brexit. EU supporters should at least blame those responsible.
