Is there a conflict of interest?

05 October, 2017

• PHIL Jones, who resigned as Camden’s member for regeneration, transport and planning on August 31, took up his post as assistant planner with Turley Associates, planning consultants, on September 18.

Is it conceivable that when Cllr Jones sat on Camden Council’s June 15 planning committee, where he voted to discharge the (incomplete) foundation plans for the 100 Avenue Road development, he would have already been in communication with Michael Lowndes, Turley’s director, who was representing developers Essential Living at that meeting?

If so, would this not have been a flagrant conflict of interest?

The borough solicitor said Cllr Jones had informed him of this potential job opportunity “some time ago”. When was this? Turley has been Essential Living’s planning consultants since 2014. Mr Lowndes was also at the 100 Avenue Road Appeal in 2015.

In any event, given that Turley are the planning consultants for a number of developments in Camden, can it be right that Phil Jones continues being a councillor?
