How to beat West Ham, by Arsenal’s women’s team

Gunners win FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup match against Hammers

23 August, 2018 — By Steve Barnett

IF Arsenal want any tips on how to handle West Ham on Saturday, then they just need to watch highlights of how the club’s women’s team performed at Meadow Park on Sunday.

The Gunners looked slick in front of goal as they began their defence of the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup with a 3-1 victory over West Ham. They broke the deadlock after just 12 minutes when Katie McCabe struck from close range, before Beth Mead headed home Emma Mitchell’s inch-perfect cross on the stroke of half-time to double the advantage.

The visitors pulled a goal back just three minutes into the second half through Brianna Visalli. But substitute Vivianne Miedema came off the bench to add some much-needed hold-up play and help Arsenal take back control of the game. Striker McCabe rounded off the scoring with her second of the game, a thumping left-footed strike from the edge of the box.
