Frognal and Fitzjohns: Conservatives puncture Labour insurgency

Henry Newman is among new councillors elected

04 May, 2018

THE Conservatives won three seats in their famously-blue fortress ward of Frognal and Fitzjohns despite Labour’s attempts to spring a surprise.

Labour candidates had canvassed roads that the party had not knocked on since the 1990s but the final result was familiar: three Conservative councillors.

Party leader Gio Spinella was returned alongside new faces Andrew Parkinson and Henry Newman, the latter being well known on the campaign trail for taking selfies with overflowing rubbish bins and fly-tipping.

“It may be a tough night for us in Camden but if you look across the country, the Conservatives are doing pretty well,” said Mr Newman.

“I’ve been trying to tell you all along that people are voting on local issues that matter to them: bin collections, recycling, planning, this is what we heard consistently on the doorstep despite the best efforts of everyone else to turn it into an election based on national topics.”

He added: “I’m looking forward to getting stuck into helping all of the constituents of the ward, whether they voted for me or not.”

Labour said their efforts had led to a six percent swing in the ward, despite being a long way off winning a seat. “We did that just by knocking on doors,” said candidate Rebecca Shirazi (pictured).
