EU citizens are welcome here
31 October, 2019
Cllr Jonathan Simpson
• BREXIT confusion reigns in parliament and this means more uncertainty for the country and especially for our EU citizens.
In Camden we’re doing what we can to support residents to prepare for what may come. Our borough is home to around 24,000 non-British EU residents but, as of June 2019, only 8,040 had applied for settled status.
Our EU citizens are a vital and hugely valued part of our community, we want them to stay and we are absolutely determined that they should continue to feel welcome.
We’re now asking everyone in the borough to help us spread this message to any EU residents they know, so that everyone who needs to, applies for settled status before the December 2020 deadline.
To help our EU residents we are providing advice and information about the process and we’re campaigning hard to ensure we reach as many people as possible.
Through the EU Make Campaign we’ve sent a postcard to every Camden household urging EU residents to apply, and to ask all residents to talk to their neighbours and friends to help us spread this important message.
We have also been providing advice sessions on the application process in libraries, in partnership with Citizens’ Advice Camden and Camden Community Law Centre, and we’re offering free appointments with borough registrars for help with ID verification.
It’s very clear from the conversations I have had that many European residents are very concerned. Our message to our EU residents is this: you are welcome here and we value all that you do for our borough, for London, and for this country.
And if you need help with your application we are here. Camden stands with you.
