POLICE are hunting for a driver who fled the scene after crashing a sports car into a lamppost in Regent’s Park this morning.

The white Mercedes collided with a lamppost opposite the Royal College of Physicians in the Outer Circle at around 4.45am on Monday. Police said the driver and a passenger, both believed to be male, had left the scene on foot.

It is believed the vehicle had careered off the road while heading south towards Park Square East. One witness suggested the driver was injured in the crash.

Police are attempting to trace the owner of the vehicle.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said they were called out to reports that a “white Mercedes had driven into a lamppost”.

The spokesman said: “It is believed a driver and a passenger, both believed to be male, left the vehicle. No arrests have been made. Enquiries continue.”
