Dan Carrier’s movies news: The Coming War on China; Judy; BFI London Film Festival
03 October, 2019 — By Dan Carrier
THIS Sunday, journalist John Pilger’s film The Coming War on China is being screened by the London Socialist Film Co-op. The film focuses on how the US Defence Department are attempting to create a formidable ring of steel around China. It includes a trip to the Bikini and Marshall Islands to see the effects of US nuclear testing. The people of these islands are not evacuated; instead, they are tested for the effects – grim. Screening is at 11am on Sunday at The Bolivar Hall,
54 Grafton Way, W1T 5DL.
• Poor Judy Garland: the screen star was not well treated by Tinseltown – and what new biopic Judy, starring Renée Zellweger (pictured) in the lead shows, is that horrible men in Hollywood have long exploited other people. We meet the Wizard of Oz star as she hits London’s West End towards the end of her career, with flashbacks to the childhood dominated by her performance in Oz. Show-stopping tunes abound, nasty men including an ex-husband (Sidney Luft, played by Rufus Sewell) creep out the woodwork and plenty of booze is consumed.
• Down to Leicester Square on Wednesday to catch the glitzy opening night gala of this year’s BFI London Film Festival. The film to kick off two weeks of movie indulgence was The Personal History of David Copperfield, directed by Death of Stalin creator Armando Iannucci. Dev Patel stars as Charles Dickens’ character David Copperfield. For those of us not on the red carpet list, the film is on general release early next year.
