Cyclists do pay their taxes

11 October, 2019

‘Cyclists have to pay VAT, council and income tax – same as the rest of us’

• MARTIN Rutherford (Think again on the ‘transport strategy’, October 4), in his long letter on traffic and pollution, ends by suggesting cyclists should be forced to wear helmets.

I don’t know how that can cut traffic jams and pollution. He then goes on to suggest cyclists “pay nothing whatsoever to use the roads”.

It’s possible Mr Rutherford is talking of road tax, properly Vehicle Excise Duty, which is payable on vehicles based on their CO2 emissions. Therefore cycles are exempt, as are electric motor vehicles.

Contrary to popular belief, road tax doesn’t actually pay for road maintenance. Local and general tax pays for our roads. As far as I am aware, cyclists have to pay VAT, council and income tax – same as the rest of us.
