Council leader to pick her own cabinet

Ruling Labour group abandons elections

CAMDEN Council leader Georgia Gould’s position at the Town Hall was consolidated further on Monday when Labour councillors agreed to let her choose her own cabinet members for the first time, dispensing with the group’s annual internal elections.

The surprise move taken at a pre-AGM is likely to be challenged, according to rebel backbenchers who described the switch as “undemocratic”.

One critic said the new system would leave councillors agitating for promotion “preening like pigeons to catch her eye”. The “leader selects” model will see Cllr Gould have the final say on the inner cabal of 10 senior Town Hall councillors. Her party already had a record number of councillors in the chamber, although last year she called in outside mediators to try and ease differences of opinion between those who favoured Jeremy Corbyn’s national leadership of the party and those who were vehemently opposed.

Supporters of the new system said it would foster new unity.
