Coffee-loving West Hampstead given special bin to recycle cups

New map shows shops which promote reusable cups

01 November, 2018

A SPECIAL “coffee cup bin” has been installed in West Hampstead in a bid to increase the numbers that are recycled.

Although the takeaway cups are notoriously difficult to recycle, Camden’s waste contractors say they will take away cups left in the bin in the clocktower square opposite West Hampstead underground station to a special facility.

Coffee-fuelled commuters pass through the square to get to the transport options in West End Lane. The scheme has been organised in conjunction with the council and the group West Hampstead Amenity and Transport (WHAT), who have also produced a “Coffee Cup” map of the area to guide people to local cafés and shops that promote the use of reusable coffee cups through initiatives such as offering discounts for customers who bring their own cups.

John Saynor, from WHAT, said: “Although the main aim of the Coffee Cup Challenge is a major reduction in the overall number of disposable cups that are used in the area every day, the recycling bin will collect the many that are still in use. And we hope that fewer will end up on the streets.”
