THE Camden New Journal was yesterday (Wednesday) named among the best print titles in the entire UK after being shortlisted for “newspaper of the year” award at the industry’s “Oscars”.

Judges at the Regional Press Awards also nominated our sister newspaper, the Islington Tribune, known for a string of exclusives and investigations in the neighbouring borough, for the prize.

Meanwhile, our reporter Emily Finch was shortlisted for the top award of weekly journalist of the year.

The nominations follow our coverage of last year’s murders and the community’s response, our ongoing work into what went wrong at the crisis-hit Chalcots estate and a unique investigation that helped identify a man who had lain in a coma at University College Hospital for weeks without anybody knowing who he was.

The nomination follows last year’s success at the annual awards, which saw the New Journal, one of the last independent local titles in the country, pick up a coveted newspaper of the year award for weekly titles with high circulations.

The awards are organised by the Society of Editors.

Executive director Ian Murray said: “We have seen record entries for this year’s Regional Press Awards, and I know that the judges have had a tremendously difficult task in choosing the nominated journalists and papers from such an excellent field of entries.”

The New Journal’s deputy editor Richard Osley said: “These nominations are recognition for how hard everybody works at the New Journal during a tough time for the local newspaper industry. But it is also recognition for how our readers engage with the paper each week, the bulging letters pages and their tips and stories.”

He added: “Ultimately you drive a community paper open to all – the real judges of what we do too – so thank you for your continued support.”

Winners will be announced next month.
