By-election called after Labour councillor quits Town Hall

Abi Wood is a former chair of licensing

07 November, 2019 — By Richard Osley

A LABOUR councillor has triggered a by-election after announcing she is quitting the Town Hall, writes Richard Osley. Abi Wood, a former licensing committee chair, had been given time by the party to make a decision on her future.

But last night (Wednesday) she messaged colleagues to confirm that she would be standing down in the Haverstock ward.

A by-election is now likely to take place on the same day as the upcoming general election, with several Labour activists expected to be interested in standing for the council.

Ms Wood did not give a reason for her departure but said she had felt proud to have been part of the ruling group, citing new council homes and support for EU citizens as achievements. “It is all the more impressive that this has been achieved despite brutal budget cuts from central government,” she said.
