Fighters and coaches from Islington Boxing Club at the Aylesbury show

FIGHTERS from Islington Boxing Club are putting in the extra miles, with the Archway-based gym seemingly taking part in competitive shows week in, week out.

The club’s hectic schedule saw six fighters lace up their gloves to take part in three shows just before Easter.

Roxanne Fraser faced Lydia Nagle, from Attleborough ABC, in the semi-finals of the National Junior Cadet Championships at the Magna Centre in Rotherham.

Roxanne, who took up the sport less than a year ago, was stopped in the final round of the contest. Club manager Reggie Hagland said: “Despite defeat, we can reflect on her achievement of being a national semi-finalist and a London champion in her first crack in a championship.”

Clubmate Islam Llabjani lost on a unanimous decision in his 69kg contest against Joshua Leggrove, from Halstead ABC, in Colchester.

The club’s junior fighters, however, showed how it’s meant to be done, with John McDonagh and Kyron Hughes picking up unanimous victories at Aylesbury Boxing Club.

There were also medals for Asadbek ‘Bek’ Ikromkhonov, who took part in a special skills bout, and Alan Aleks, who lost on a split decision in his contest, in an entertaining show.
