ARSENAL manager Joe Montemurro said his side found “a big heart and a massive backbone” during their battle against Manchester City on Saturday in the Women’s League Cup final.

Despite a gutsy performance, the Gunners were beaten 4-2 on penalties at Bramall Lane in Sheffield after neither side could break the deadlock in 120 minutes.

In the end England keeper Karen Bardsley proved the heroine as she made smart saves in the shootout to deny Arsenal’s Leah Williamson and Danielle van de Donk.

After the final whistle, Montemurro said: “We’ve found an Arsenal team with a massive heart and belief. We’ve got a massive spine and backbone that is a good foundation, because we can all play pretty football and all train and talk about football, but sometimes you need these elements to be part of where we’re going. I can’t be any prouder of my players, they were mammoth.”
