Blackberries are good for you
13 September, 2018
• NO blackberrying, because “every piece of fruit plays a crucial role in the balance of our ecosystem” say the Hampstead Heath managers, (‘Don’t pick the Heath berries’, September 6). But I fear that balance is just what they’ve lost.
No doubt the ecosystem would be better if human beings were kept out of the Heath completely, but it’s supposed to be managed for the benefit of people as well as wildlife. So surely the Heath should not be even more restricted than a nature reserve.
The organisation of UK Wildlife Trusts, which between them manage over 2,300 nature reserves, has a page on their website (www.wildlifetrusts.org/where-see-wildlife/where-to-see-autumn-wildlife) which actually encourages blackberry picking. There are plenty of berries for the birds, well out of reach of humans.
