ISLINGTON North MP Jeremy Corbyn’s son wished him happy birthday this week with a special post on social media.
The former Labour Party leader turned 71 on Monday and son Tommy chose a photograph of the pair of them together on his allotment in East Finchley to mark the occasion.
“Happy birthday to this one,” said Tommy Corbyn. “The man who gave me green fingers. Always an inspiration, never once worried he’d have my back. He should be PM right now but he’ll always be my Dad.”
Mr Corbyn, who passed the leadership baton on to Sir Keir Starmer earlier this year, has been the MP for the north of the borough since 1983. He was twice voted to be the leader of the Labour Party by members but stepped down after losing the general election in December.
Despite his rise to the top of the party, he has never made any secret of his love of the peace and quiet of being on his vegetable patch and was pictured wearing a green T-shirt with the slogan ‘I’d rather be down the allotment’.
He once explained that growing spinach and beans, and gardening, gave him time to think.
“You have to make time to make sure you have a balance in your life,” he said.
“If you do one thing, you don’t necessarily do it very well. If you do other things, it helps you think about things.”
