An independent estimate of the cost of HS2 is more than £100billion

• I AGREE with Dr Mayer Hillman (We need to pledge to look again at HS2 expenditure, May 11) that the HS2 project should be reviewed, and urgently.
But the cost is even greater than the £60billion he states. The whole project has been costed independently by Michael Byng, an experienced surveyor.
He estimates that the first phase will cost about £54billion and the whole railway over £100billion, both these figures being about twice HS2’s. It’s unaffordable.
