Always on the side of readers and residents

‘I felt I knew Eric Gordon from the pages of his paper’
• I WAS never fortunate enough to meet Eric Gordon but I felt I knew him from the pages of his paper first as the Camden New Journal was born in struggle and then with the Islington Tribune, (Eric Gordon, editor and founder of the Camden New Journal, dies at 89, April 5).
Both papers were as decent, funny, and bighearted as the boroughs themselves. I knew each week that I would find something new, get to know my neighbours a little better.
A trip to south London – or a riffle through the pages of the Standard – would always be a reminder of how lucky we are to have had a paper that for decades was always on the side of the readers and residents of Camden and Islington.
I can’t imagine Eric could ever rest in peace, but long may the spirit of solidarity and good trouble which he brought to north London ring out in tribute.
Thanks for everything.
