ALEX Oxlade-Chamberlain became the latest Arsenal player to leave the club as he joined rivals Liverpool in £40 million deal on transfer deadline day.

The 24-year-old posed in a Liverpool shirt, caressing the badge and then released a message to the Arsenal fans in which he thanked them for ‘always having his back’.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, who failed to cement a regular first team place during six stop-start years at the Emirates Stadium, said: “I want to publicly thank Arsene, the coaching and club staff and my amazing team mates for all of the incredible opportunities I have been given. Thank you so much to you the fans, who have always had my back – I honestly couldn’t be more grateful. The club, and my time here, will always mean a massive amount to me.”

He added: “I know my choice might come as a surprise to many, and the decision to leave was tough after being a part of the club for so many years, but I feel that this move is right for the next stage in my ongoing development.”

The midfielder, who was fielded against Liverpool on Sunday in Arsenal’s lacklustre display at Anfield, follows the exits of Kieran Gibbs and Gabriel, to West Brom and Valencia respectively. Star striker Alexis Sanchez, meanwhile, is being heavily linked to a move to Manchester City this afternoon (Thursday).
