£33k fines for Swain’s Lane worker death firms

Building site regulations breaches

21 February, 2020 — By Tom Foot

TWO companies have been fined £33,000 after a construction worker was killed in an explosion on a demolition site.

Materials Movement Ltd and PJ Labour Services Ltd pleaded guilty at Westminster Magistrates’ Court to breaching building site regulations.

Stephen Hampton, 54, was crushed to death in Swain’s Lane, Highgate, by debris from a fuel storage tank he had mistakenly opened with a flame-tipped cutter.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive this week concluded that both contractors “failed in their duties to effectively plan, manage and monitor control measures to address the risks associated with the demolition of a site that contained fuel tanks”.

An inquest jury ruled last year, following two weeks of evidence at St Pancras Coroner’s Court, it was not clear who was to blame for the death.

The coroner did not issue a “Prevention of Future Deaths” order.
